Martin Zimmermann, Bryan’s assistant director of Planning and Development Services, discusses the state of planning and development in Bryan in January 2022

Well, the state of planning and development in Bryan has never been busier. Last year we saw a record number of detached home permits being issued. We didn't quite crack the thousand new home barrier, but we got pretty close, and so, what is really surprising, as you know, for the last two years the whole world has been sort of in a state of emergency and the prognosis was that things were going to slow down and things were going to be different, but that's really not what we're seeing. Of course there's always rumors on the jobs sites and we hear that from our inspectors, "Oh, things are going to slow down after the first of the year or after this month or towards the fall, but so far that hasn't happened. It didn't happen last year, it didn't happen the year before. As Lauren has probably told you, for the last seven years, things ahave steadily looked up. I can't imagine...if you think about it, in 2012 we had 300 permits. Last year we had 3 times as many. So, we're certainly busy. It can be challenging at times, not going to deny that, lots to do, keeps us busy. But we do the best we can to make sure that what is constructed is safe and meets all of the adopted standards.
